When he was young, AngryJoeShow began playing video games after a family friend gave them his Sega Genesis. MechWarrior 3050 was one of his favorite games to play with his friends. Later, he began playing PC games on his father's Pentium 486, with XCOM: Enemy Unknown serving as one of his earliest games. When he was young, he and his friends would rent video games from the video store every weekend. The first video game that he purchased on his own was Inca II.

On October 4, 2008, he first uploaded rant videos to YouTube. From there, he quickly started making parody, review, news, and other gaming-related videos. He made the decision to try his hand at content creation, planning out his new material during his downtime at work so that he could actualize it once he got home. Since its inception, AngryJoeShow has taken seriously the creation of content and frequently worked 80-hour weeks in an effort to promote expansion. When this began to actually occur, he made the decision to leave his office position at Dell and pursue content creation full-time. In February 2009, when Justin.tv was still active, he began streaming on Twitch.
