When Summit1G first began playing video games, he preferred console titles like Final Fantasy and Joe Montana Football over other gaming hardware. He didn't start playing seriously, though, until he was a teenager and noticed people playing Counter Strike (CS) on PCs while he was there to buy Pokemon cards. He tried to download it right away, but his slow dial-up internet connection and 32mg of RAM on his computer prevented him from playing it. He decided to stick with Team Fortress Classic as a result. While his parents limited him to two-hour gaming sessions per day, his computer only let him access sniping mode, which is how he gradually honed his sniping skills. After some time, his father decided to buy him a real computer that could support CS because he saw that gaming wasn't hurting his grades. He held a position as a Call Representative prior to streaming.

After work, summit1G kept playing video games and began streaming CS. When The War Z was released, he switched to it and gradually grew his audience until, in 2012, Owned offered him the chance to stream full-time. He made the decision to take the chance because he hated his job anyway and had about 350 viewers at the time. Fortunately for him, almost every game he picked to stream ended up being the next big thing on Twitch, which led to the steady growth of his channel. Because of this, he largely credits his own success with luck rather than anything he specifically did to establish his YouTube channel. Soon after, he also began streaming on Twitch. Although CS remains his favorite game, he believes that his success came from branching out and streaming other games, such as The War Z.
