Shroud Leaves Twitch!

Almost two months after poaching Ninja from Twitch, Mixer has managed to snag another prominent figure in the streaming world. Yesterday, Shroud tweeted that he will now be streaming exclusively on Microsoft’s platform. His first stream is scheduled for tomorrow. As with Ninja, fans will also be able to subscriber to his channel for free for the next month.

By his first stream today, Shroud already had over 100,000 subscribers to his channel and 61,000 viewers were there within minutes of him starting up his first stream. That’s potentially 100,000 fewer eyes on Twitch for the next months at least. The timing also couldn’t have him better with him starting off his new channel with the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

So far, Ninja’s move to Mixer hasn’t really seemed to impact the overall number of active users too much, but Microsoft is likely hoping that the more streamers leaving Twitch for Mixer, the more likely it is that people will be sticking with the platform. At the very least, it serves as a warning to Twitch that they will need to start taking Mixer and other minor competitors more seriously, as no matter what the financial gains are to signing with Microsoft, they wouldn’t likely accept the offers if they weren’t dissatisfied with Twitch.

In an interview with TG2 in December 2019, Ninja revealed that a major motivator for his leaving was due to months of failing negotiations with Twitch. With Mixer, however, he reached an agreement within two weeks of first reaching out to them. As for Shroud, it seems that his motivation was likely due to the money involved, as when Ninja’s move was announced, he told his stream that he saw no other motivator for him to leave Twitch.

We will have to wait until the end of his multi-year contract to see whether this will be a permanent change for him, whether it will affect his viewership over the long-term and whether this will be the move to finally encourage further permanent traffic to its platform.
