Kai Cenat Taken Into Custody

According to NBC 4 NY, Twitch broadcaster Kai Cenat was detained after a PS5 giveaway sparked a disturbance in Union Square in New York City.

Around 4 o’clock local time, a “few thousand individuals” flocked to Union Square as the streamer announced a “HUGE GIVEAWAY,” the NYPD reported. “The highest level of police mobilization” was triggered after the streets filled, according to NBC 4. Kai was “pulled out from the massive crowd by police officers and placed into custody.”

In the commotion seen on camera by NBC 4, people could be seen hurling objects at police as they tried to move barricades, and it appeared like tear gas was used to try and disperse the gathering. Kai Cenat broadcast the event live on Twitch, but the lone VOD from today was only a little under three minutes long. In the VOD, fans can be seen swarming and surrounding Kai and his security team in an attempt to get a glimpse of the streaming star or enter the raffle to win a PS5. 

Cenat posted a video earlier in the day from inside a car showcasing several PS5s and a sizable stack of $100 gift cards that he planned to give away to admirers. 

According to NBC 4, the mob spread far beyond the Union Square plaza where the giveaway was scheduled to occur, blocking E 14th Street and Broadway south of Union Square and “into other streets.” Police were still making an effort to disperse the gathering more than an hour after the event was scheduled to begin, according to NBC 4. August 4, 10:53 p.m. CT update: Following the out-of-control incident, Cenat is anticipated to be prosecuted with two charges of inciting a riot and unlawful assembly, as stated by NYPD department chief Jeffery Maddrey in a report by NBC 4. 

Maddrey said the gift had not been coordinated in advance with the police or the city during a press conference with the journalists. This demonstrates both the strength and risk of social media, according to Maddrey. Over 65 persons were taken into custody in Union Square Park and the adjacent neighborhood, and three police officers sustained injuries.
