Ninja Leaves Twitch!

In a surprise move, Ninja has released an announcement video revealing his decision to leave Twitch in favor of streaming exclusively on Microsoft’s Mixer. He is the top-followed streamer on Twitch, with over 14 million followers and was earning $500,000 USD per month from subscriptions at his peak. Therefore, this move is a genius move on Mixer’s part, especially given the amount of exposure he and other streamers gave Apex Legends when they paid him $1 Million USD to play their game during the first week of its release.

This exposure boost had many of the other big-name Twitch streamers also playing Apex for the next couple of weeks, even those who weren’t also paid lesser incentives, which definitely increased the number of new players who initially downloaded the game, as opposed to how many would otherwise have started playing it when it first released.

This move is most likely due to the financial incentives offered by Microsoft, despite Ninja stating that he wants to ‘return to his streaming roots.’ Although the contract terms have not yet been revealed, we do know that Microsoft is also offering two-months free subscription to Ninja’s channel from anyone who joins the platform.

While it is unlikely that viewers will suddenly switch to exclusively watching content on Mixer while their other favorite streamers are still streaming on Twitch, the fact is that tens of thousands of people are now aware of Mixer who probably didn’t even know that it existed before. Even non-gamers know who Ninja is and will now also know what mixer is thanks to top media outlets such as The Verge and Forbes also reporting on the move.

However, whether this move will truly allow Ninja to ‘return to his roots’ or truly get Mixer the increased viewership that its gunning for beyond those watching Ninja’s stream will have to be seen.
